Dear fellow members,
As we are at the beginning of a new year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very healthy and prosperous year.
It is my honour and privilege to be serving our Club as President & Chair of the Board. I have been a TCC member for 33 years, and this is my ninth year serving on the Board. Although I have put in quite a few hours serving our Club over the years, I can sincerely say that I have gotten back much more than I put in. Over these years I have come to know other members of the Board, our management team, as well as our staff, very well. In some ways I feel that I am part of the Club! So I am looking forward to helping lead our Club to continued success and sustainability.
Two of my top priorities as Club President are to see through to completion some important projects that were begun in 2018. The first is the addition of entryway doors in our front lobby, with the intention of separating the lower lobby from the main Club space and improving the overall arrival experience for both members and guests. The second is to see through the renovation and update of the Members’ Lounge. I am excited about the new plans for this space and what it will mean to our members once complete. The addition of personal, temperature-controlled wine lockers will be an interesting option for many of our members, and also puts Terminal City Club at the forefront of innovation in the city. A nod to the heritage of the room will also remain: one pool table and one billiards table will be retained for use by members and their guests. Please see the draft rendering of the Members’ Lounge on page 9.
A third priority this year is to reach our target of 1,892 shareholding members. This target represents a level of security and sustainability that will benefit our business and correspondingly, all our members. We are well positioned to achieve this target in the coming months, although new members do not happen by accident so work will need to continue as it has over the past year to help us reach this goal. You can view the trends in our membership numbers over the past 15 years on the graph on page 11. I’m confident that with your help, we will reach 1,892 shareholding members very soon. Once that level of membership is achieved, our Board will review the member subscription rates.
As many people know, I’m a regular in the TCC Fitness Centre. January is the start of our 45 Day Fitness Challenge, and I wish good luck to all those who choose to participate. Completing the challenge is a huge personal achievement, and it is certainly an excellent way to start a new fitness routine or reinvigorate your current regime. Whether you prefer your fitness as an individual pursuit or you enjoy the camaraderie of a group (see the addition of many new classes on page 14 & 15), I encourage you to give it your best shot and see how well you feel!
It is a pleasure to step into the role of Terminal City Club President for 2019. I am committed to continuing the thoughtful work that has already been done by our Board of Directors over the past several years, and I am also keen to hear feedback from you, our members. I look forward to seeing you all around the Club.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ignatius Cheung
Terminal City Club President
